About your map

Places and counts

The map includes 250 countries, territories and other destinations. The country counter tracks the 193 United Nations members separately. Palestine, Vatican City and Kosovo are selectable destinations outside that count.

Visiting a territory does not mark its associated country. Regions and pins are independent of country visits.

Borders and disputed territories

The base map comes from Natural Earth, with explicit corrections for selected disputed territories. Crimea and Sevastopol are included in Ukraine, following the EU’s non-recognition of their annexation. Northern Cyprus and the UN buffer zone are included in Cyprus; the British sovereign bases remain separate. Somaliland is included in Somalia. Territorial ownership and de facto control are different concepts. These corrections do not imply that every border on this map follows a single EU worldview.

Regional preview

The regional catalog now covers many countries. Spain offers autonomous communities and provinces as separate levels. Available layers pass structural checks; current administrative divisions and official boundaries still need review. The first review of 30 pending destinations incorporates 12 corrections; 14 cases still need new geometry, administrative-level checks or alignment with the national map. The 52 previously absent territories have also been investigated: 19 layers are added, 11 places use whole-destination visits and pins, and 22 still need source or geographic-level work. See regional coverage for every destination, source year and pending update.

Sources and licenses

Country boundaries: Natural Earth, public domain. City search: GeoNames, CC BY 4.0.

Regional boundaries: geoBoundaries. Costa Rica, Japan, Luxembourg and Tuvalu use ODbL 1.0; Romania uses CC BY 4.0; Italy uses CC BY 3.0. Direct HDX COD-AB replacements use their published CC BY 3.0 IGO license. Norway uses offline polygons from Kartverket, CC BY 4.0. Selected territorial layers also use Natural Earth (public domain), U.S. Census Bureau TIGERweb (public domain), and IGN / DINUM API Geo with INSEE COG 2026 (Licence Ouverte 2.0). French arrondissements are derived by unioning commune contours according to the 2026 membership table. Hong Kong uses the Home Affairs Department official export under DATA.GOV.HK terms of use, permitting commercial reuse. Other countries retain their own licenses. Spain’s provincial source follows the INE reuse conditions: elaboración propia con datos del INE (2018). Regional maps are simplified jointly by country and are visually masked to the country outline. Each layer retains its source attribution, license and snapshot year in the regional catalog, with links to the original and adapted databases.
